Keyhole surgery and Endoscopy

At Blackpool Veterinary Hospital Keyhole surgery, laparascopic neutering and endoscopic procedures are among the many services we provide.

Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive technique for viewing the internal structures of the abdomen and thorax. A Laparoscope (camera) inserted through a small incision in the body wall allowing a magnified view of the internal structures of the thorax and/or abdomen on a TV monitor or camera.

Additional small incisions can be made to facilitate the use of surgical instruments. One of the more common uses of laparoscopy has been to provide a safer and less painful alternative to traditional neutering in pets.

LAPAROSCOPIC SPAY VS TRADITIONAL SPAY

  • A recent study concluded Laparoscopic spays caused less surgical stress and therefore less post-operative pain than a traditional open surgical spay
  • Laparoscopy allows for better visualisation of abdominal organs allowing the entire surgery to be performed through a few tiny incisions rather than a larger abdominal opening. Smaller incisions are less painful reducing recovery time
  • Controlled incisions eliminate pain and bruising caused by the tearing of tissue associated with traditional spays
  • No external sutures means self trauma post surgery is less likely reducing the need for Buster collars and other post surgical protectors
  • In large breed dogs gastropexy can be performed at the time of spay
  • In laparoscopic speys tissue is cut and cauterised not torn and sutured as in traditional speys which is less traumatic and less painful
  • The procedure is performed with magnified views of the organs allowing complete visualisation of the entire abdominal contents

ENDOSCOPY

Endoscopy is a minimally invasive treatment used on pets to evaluate the linings of organs or structures, diagnose disorders, and collect samples for study. It may help identify any problems before surgery is required! Even removing tiny foreign items and finding aberrant cells can be done with endoscopy without putting your pet in unnecessary danger.

Endoscopy can be used for gastrointestinal disorders, nasal disorders, bladder disorders and also respiratory disorders.
